Early Life and Education

King Matthias The Just was born in Kolozsvár, Hungary, on March 23, 1443. He was the son of John Hunyadi, a successful military leader who served as regent of Hungary during the minority of King Ladislaus V. Matthias's mother was Erzsébet Szilágyi, a noblewoman from Transylvania.

Matthias received a well-rounded education that included Latin, Greek, and Italian. He was also fluent in Hungarian, German, and Turkish. Matthias was a gifted student and showed a particular interest in history and philosophy.

Rise to Power

In 1456, King Ladislaus V died without an heir. This led to a power struggle between various factions within Hungary. Matthias's father, John Hunyadi, was elected regent, but he died shortly thereafter. Matthias was then elected king by the Hungarian Diet.

Matthias faced a number of challenges when he came to power. The country was still recovering from the Ottoman invasion of 1456, and there was widespread disorder and corruption. Matthias quickly set about restoring order and stability to Hungary.

Reign

Matthias's reign was marked by a period of great prosperity for Hungary. He expanded the country's borders, defeated the Ottoman Turks, and promoted the arts and sciences. Matthias was also a patron of the Renaissance, and he invited many Italian artists and scholars to his court.

Matthias was a wise and benevolent ruler. He was known for his justice and fairness, and he was loved by his people. Matthias died in Vienna on April 6, 1490. He was succeeded by his son, Ulászló II.

Legacy

King Matthias The Just is considered one of the greatest kings of Hungary. He was a successful military leader, a wise and benevolent ruler, and a patron of the arts and sciences. Matthias left a lasting legacy on Hungary, and he is still remembered as one of the country's most beloved kings.
