Fela was born in Abeokuta, Nigeria, in 1938. His father was a Protestant minister and his mother was a feminist activist. Fela began playing music at an early age, and by the time he was a teenager, he was leading his own band. In 1963, he traveled to London to study music at Trinity College of Music. While in London, he was exposed to a wide range of musical influences, including jazz, soul, and funk. He also became involved in the civil rights movement and the Black Power movement.

In 1969, Fela returned to Nigeria and formed his own band, the Afrika '70. The band's music was a unique blend of Afrobeat, funk, and jazz, and it quickly became popular in Nigeria and beyond. Fela's music was often political and he used it to speak out against corruption, oppression, and poverty. He also became a vocal critic of the Nigerian government and its military dictatorship.

In 1977, Fela was arrested for possession of marijuana and spent 20 months in prison. While in prison, he wrote his most famous song, "Zombie." The song is a scathing indictment of the Nigerian military and its brutal tactics.
