American Foreign Policy in its Century: Princeton Studies in International History
Abstract
This book examines the evolution of American foreign policy over the course of the 20th century. It argues that the United States has pursued a consistent grand strategy of maintaining a balance of power in Europe and Asia. This strategy has been successful in preventing the rise of a single hegemon and in maintaining a relatively stable global order. However, the book also argues that the United States is facing new challenges in the 21st century, and that it will need to adapt its grand strategy in order to continue to be successful.

The United States emerged from the 19th century as a rising power with a growing global reach. By the early 20th century, the United States was the world's leading economic and military power. This new status brought with it a new set of challenges and responsibilities, and the United States began to develop a more active and assertive foreign policy.
The United States' grand strategy in the 20th century was to maintain a balance of power in Europe and Asia. This strategy was based on the belief that a single hegemon in either region would pose a threat to the United States and its allies. The United States pursued this strategy through a combination of military alliances, economic sanctions, and diplomatic pressure.
The United States' grand strategy was largely successful in the 20th century. The United States prevented the rise of a single hegemon in Europe or Asia, and it maintained a relatively stable global order. However, the United States is facing new challenges in the 21st century, and it will need to adapt its grand strategy in order to continue to be successful.
The Challenges of the 21st Century
The United States is facing a number of new challenges in the 21st century, including:
- The rise of China as a major economic and military power.
- The spread of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction.
- The increasing interconnectedness of the global economy.
- The growing threat of climate change.
These challenges will require the United States to adapt its grand strategy in order to continue to be successful. The United States will need to find new ways to maintain a balance of power in Europe and Asia, to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons, and to address the challenges of the global economy and climate change.
The United States has a long and complex history of foreign policy. The United States' grand strategy in the 20th century was to maintain a balance of power in Europe and Asia. This strategy was largely successful, but the United States is facing new challenges in the 21st century. The United States will need to adapt its grand strategy in order to continue to be successful in the 21st century.
