The Outbreak of the Civil War:When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Davis was a student at the University of Nashville. He immediately joined the Confederate Army and was assigned to the 1st Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. Davis quickly proved to be a brave and skilled soldier.

Capture and Imprisonment:In November 1863, Davis was captured by Union forces while on a scouting mission behind enemy lines. He was taken to prison in Nashville and charged with spying. Davis refused to give any information to the Union authorities, even though he knew that his refusal could lead to his execution.

Trial and Execution:Davis's trial was a mockery of justice. He was found guilty of spying and sentenced to death by hanging. Davis was hanged on November 27, 1863, at the age of 21. His last words were, "I am ready to die for my country."

Legacy:Sam Davis's death made him a martyr for the Confederate cause. His story was widely publicized in the South, and he became a symbol of the Southern struggle for independence. Davis's legacy continues to inspire Southerners today, and he is still considered one of the greatest heroes of the Confederacy.
