Early Life and Education

Hamish Mcfee Ptolemy Tompkins was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1802. His father was a doctor, and his mother was a writer. Hamish was a bright and curious child, and he showed an early interest in the natural world. He spent much of his time exploring the countryside around his home, and he collected plants and animals for his own personal museum.

Hamish attended the University of Edinburgh, where he studied medicine. However, he soon realized that his true passion was exploration. He left university and joined the Royal Navy, where he served as a surgeon on a ship that sailed to the far corners of the world.

Exploring the World

In 1830, Hamish Mcfee Ptolemy Tompkins led an expedition to the Amazon rainforest. He was the first European to explore this vast and mysterious region, and he made many important discoveries.
