The Blunders, Missteps, Mishaps, and Missed Opportunities of the Donald Trump Presidency
Donald Trump's presidency was marked by a series of mistakes, missteps, mishaps, and missed opportunities. These included:
1. The Muslim travel ban
One of Trump's first acts as president was to sign an executive order banning travel from several Muslim-majority countries. The order was widely condemned as discriminatory and unconstitutional, and it was eventually overturned by the courts.

2. The withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement
Trump also withdrew the United States from the Paris climate agreement, a global agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The withdrawal was widely criticized by environmentalists and world leaders.
3. The firing of FBI Director James Comey
Trump fired FBI Director James Comey in May 2017, sparking a political firestorm. Comey was leading the FBI's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, and many saw his firing as an attempt to obstruct justice.
4. The Charlottesville rally
In August 2017, a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, turned deadly. Trump initially equivocated in his response to the violence, saying that there were "very fine people on both sides." His comments were widely condemned, and they led to a decline in his approval ratings.
5. The Helsinki summit
In July 2018, Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland. At a press conference after the meeting, Trump sided with Putin over his own intelligence agencies on the issue of Russian interference in the 2016 election. The summit was widely seen as a major foreign policy blunder.
6. The shutdown of the federal government
In December 2018, Trump triggered a partial shutdown of the federal government over funding for a border wall. The shutdown lasted for 35 days, the longest in U.S. history. It caused widespread disruption and cost the U.S. economy billions of dollars.
7. The Ukraine scandal
In July 2019, Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The charges stemmed from allegations that Trump had pressured Ukraine to investigate his political rival, Joe Biden. Trump was acquitted by the Senate, but the scandal damaged his presidency.
8. The COVID-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic began in early 2020. Trump's handling of the pandemic was widely criticized. He downplayed the severity of the virus, made false claims about its spread, and resisted calls for lockdowns and other public health measures. As a result, the United States became one of the hardest-hit countries in the world by the pandemic.
9. The Capitol riot
On January 6, 2021, a mob of Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol Building in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The riot was the culmination of months of Trump's false claims that the election had been stolen from him. Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives for incitement of insurrection, but he was acquitted by the Senate.
The Trump presidency was a tumultuous one, marked by a series of mistakes, missteps, mishaps, and missed opportunities. These events damaged Trump's presidency, eroded public trust, and left a lasting legacy on American politics.
